On our way to Lake Mývatn, we drive along the East coast of Eyjafjordur which offers a panoramic view of Akureyri and the Eyjafjordur Fjord, the longest and one of the most magnificent fjords in Iceland. Then we cross the Vikurskard-pass and swoop along the beautiful valley of Fnjóskadalur, where you can clearly see the influence of the ice age glaciers. A popular salmon angling river, Fnjóska, runs through the valley.

Solfataras at Myvatn

When we arrive at the Lake Mývatn area, we stop at Skútustadir, known for its symmetrically formed pseudo craters, which are among the best known in the world.  From Skútustadir there is a also good view of Lake Mývatn and the mountains around the lake.

The next stop is at Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles), a spectacular maze of strange lava structures, covered with surprisingly lush vegetation. From Dimmuborgir we drive to the geothermal area of Hverir at Namaskard, one of the most spectacular places in the country, with it's solfataras (boiling sulphur mudpits) and widely different colors.

Before or after the lake Mývatn, we make a half hour stop at the waterfall Godafoss, famed not only for its beauty, but also as the scene of historical events from the saga times.

The tour might start or conclude with a short sight-seeing city-tour in Akureyri.
